."The colder you are, the tighter your muscles are," he said.Guillory suggests taking the first 67 miles at a 15 secondspermileslower pace than your goal pace."You want to conserve a lot of energy," says Guillory. "Typically, everyone goes to the starting line caught up in the hoopla. It's a waste of energy."The slower pace will cost you maybe 90 seconds.Page 331"But you'll save 1020 minutes if you don't bonk at Mile 20," says Guillory. To fight the tedium during the race, Guillory suggests you play mind games.Look for people ahead of you and try to catch them. Interact with the volunteers. Most of all, don't think of it as a 26mile, 385yard race. Think of it as 26 onemile races."If you try to cut down the forest in one big whack," says Guillory, "it'll kill you." (Norcross, 1998, p. D2)Newspaper, magazine, and newsletter service journalism has been around for a long time. The earliest efforts were published in the traditional women's publications such as Ladies' Home Journal and Good Housekeeping, first developed more than 100 years ago. Much of their content was serviceoriented information about the home. These articles are not necessarily "spot news" in the sense that we usually talk about news. Although they are very new, online publications have quickly come to use these types of articles as well. This is especially true of online publications that maintain theme Web sites or specializations. Service feature articles are an important part of any newspaper, magazine, newsletter, and online publication and readers depend on these articles as part of the total package. These articles help readers do something better~ they help make life easier. These articles are usually found in four forms: howtodoit features, listings, art of living articles, and chronological case histories:1. The howto article explains how something is made, built, cooked, protected, purchased, or otherwise accomplished by an expert on the subject. These articles are often found in home and garden sections, food/cooking sections, and increasingly so in consumerbased sections of newspapers and in the similarly named departments of magazines or newsletters. Howto articles are the most frequently published forms of service article. It is certainly a popular story form with editors, according to Alexander (1975). "[I]n a pragmatic nation, Americans look more and more to magazines to advise them and show them how to do the things that are important in their lives" (p. 213).Page 3322. Listings have become more interesting in recent years in newspapers, magazines, and newsletters. Sports sections of newspapers and sportsoriented magazines offer lists of records and interesting trivia as regular features for readers. Business and financeoriented publications frequently run lists of top businesses, top salaries of executives, real estate transactions, and so on. Feature sections of newspapers and city and regional magazines have, for many years, listed in calendar form the major events of an upcoming weekend or month and have listed top restaurants and theaters in their circulation areas.3. Artofliving articles teach us how to get more out of life. These often are inspirational articles, with readers feeling uplifted after reading about someone else's skill at making his or her life better. Sometimes these articles (and books) are called selfhelp articles and are simply no more than narratives or essays that affect readers in one way or another and give them ideas about how to improve their own lives or the lives of family members or friends. These articles include subjects such as retirement, love and family relationships, and making tough decisions.4. Chronological case histories teach us about something by looking at a particular example in depth. Readers are served by the lesson learned from the case history. These can include descriptions of purchasing a house, curing a medical problem, or resolving a conflict between neighbors. The four approaches to these articles are not limited to single articles. There are entire magazines that specialize in howto journalism, for example. Books, too, have been written on hundreds of subjects to help readers in the same way everything from career choices, résumé writing, and job hunting to personal finance, automobile repair, and relationships with the opposite sex.Approaches to Writing Service ArticlesTown & Country's Fiori says service magazines and articles "help the reader to cope with aging parents or one's aging self, an alcoholicPage 333coworker, a serious illness, unemployment, change of address or change of life. They might even inspire the reader to contribute to society by volunteering his or her services, by writing to Congress, by joining a local environmental group. Or, closer to home, by spending more time with the kids" (1992, p. 79) [ Pobierz caÅ‚ość w formacie PDF ]
